Let’s go straight to the point: if you don’t like cats, Istanbul is not for you. Truth be told, Türkiye isn’t either!
A country where stray cats have designated seats in front of shops, are welcomed warmly inside mosques, and receive continuous care from locals is simply not built for people who dislike animals. If you are one of those, please leave. This blog is also not for you.
As one of the world’s most cat friendly cities, Istanbul is home to an estimated 200,000 stray cats, all looked after collectively by its residents. But this “cat culture” isn’t just a modern trend; it is deeply rooted in history, religion, and even ancient trade routes.

Why So Many Cats in Istanbul?
Istanbul’s cat population grew a lot due to their status in Islam. Cats are considered “clean creatures” in Islamic tradition. Prophet Mohammed himself, was well known for his affection toward cats, so harming them is forbidden.
Witches are also big cat lovers, as well as church grandmas, which definitely put cats into a different level. Loved and cherished by many.
Trade and maritime history also played a big role in this “Istanbul & Cats” love story. It is known that since Constantinople times, the area was one of the world’s main port cities. Ships coming to the docks always carried cats onboard to control pest populations. Over time, these cats made the city their permanent home and nowadays are fully integrated.
During the Ottoman Empire, there was even an official profession known as a mancacı (pronounced man-jah-dee), whose job was specifically to feed and care for local stray animals.
With such royal treatment, it is no surprise that travelers from around the world come to Istanbul specifically to spend time with its furry residents. Here are five of the best places to see (and fall in love with) street cats in Istanbul:
1. Cihangir
Located on the European side of Istanbul, Cihangir is one of the city’s most colorful and artistic neighborhoods, with a particular “bohemian” side that makes you feel like selling all your belongings, renting a flat and spending the rest of your life there.
It had great vibes, alternative coffee shops, vintage boutiques and thrift stores, local pubs, and a massive cat population. Nine times out of ten, you will find yourself sharing an outdoor cafe table with a friendly local cat. Come with your cameras ready.
2. Mosques
Istanbul’s historic mosques are famous cat sanctuaries. Hagia Sophia was home to its resident cat, Gli, who stole the hearts of millions of visitors through her own dedicated Instagram account. Even Barack Obama made sure to meet her!

While Gli has passed away, her descendants continue to thrive across the complex. From the carpeted prayer halls to the upper galleries, cats are everywhere and always happy to greet travelers.
3. The Cat Museum (Kedi Müzesi)
Located just a few steps from the Galata Tower, Istanbul has its very own Cat Museum. Unfortunately, this is one of those places that you will definitely miss in case you’re not specifically looking for it.
Look to your left and you will see a sign at the gate with a question “Why so many cats in Istanbul?”. You will learn the answering by entering the building. The Cat Museum is a two floors private exhibition that explores their history and local legacy.
The entrance is free of charge but if you would like to help make a difference, downstairs, the gift shop offers t-shirts, postcards, and eco-bags.
50% of all profits are donated directly to local animal welfare organizations providing food and medical care to not only cats, but stray animals in general.
4. Ali Bey’s Cat Shelter
Mr. Ali is a local hero dedicated to animal rescue and protection. He transformed a small corner of Beyoğlu into an open air cat sanctuary accessible to visitors. It is an inspiring stop on any walk through the neighborhood, and direct donations to help fund food and veterinary care are always welcomed.
5. BONUS: on your Screen through the “Kedi” Documentary
Istanbul’s cats are true worldwide celebrities. The critically acclaimed 2016 documentary Kedi (which translates to “Cat” in Turkish) highlights the unique bond between the city of Istanbul and its street cats.
Available to watch on YouTube, the doc offers an intimate look into local culture before you even land in Türkiye.
Beyond Istanbul: Cats Across Türkiye
While Istanbul is undoubtedly the cat capital of Türkiye, cat companions are everywhere across the country.
You will find them resting under the sun among the ruins of Ephesus, roaming around the valleys of Cappadocia, and even playing with tourists at the Aegean coast.
Choosing a travel itinerary simply because ChatGPT recommended it, is not the most intelligent way to truly FEEL a destination. Having the freedom to pursue your personal interests, take your time, and genuinely connect with the culture creates an entirely different kind of experience.
After thirteen years in Türkiye, I can confidently say that not everyone needs to book a Bosphorus cruise, and not everyone has to eat a fish sandwich under the Galata Bridge. But if you are a cat lover, for instance, your journey MUST reflect your passion.
That is where I come in. As a dedicated travel advisor, I specialize in crafting tailor made Türkiye itineraries designed around who you are and how you love to travel. Your journey doesn’t have to be generic unless you want it to be.
